Dear friend, what happened?

Updated: Mar 30, 2023

My friend

You used to see a silver lining bursting through every cloud

Come now, where are all those jokes we would share

Echoes resonant as we’d laugh out loud?

But now, too quickly, you take offence,

Now a different view is what you see

Your mind assigned as your self-defence

A little cynical have you turned out to be?

Your view of life was one of glee,

through glasses with rose tint

But now the glass is black and speckled with grey,

with nothing to drink to wash cynical away.

My dear friend,

Tell me what went wrong; is it due to the fellows of life?

With its sullied goals and fettered hopes

Or its cold misfortune where sadness gropes?

My friend, this is life

with all its warts, with laughter, tears and pain

Let go of bitterness; set it free

For I long to see my old friend again.
